Hey there!
Max had another bad morning. It was rough, he was lethargic and didn’t even enjoy his walk and his walks are his favorite. So there was much soothing and cuddling this morning, and he was doing better before I left for work, he was wagging his tail and everything. He is much better now, which makes all this so weird. He’s pitiful in the morning and fine by the afternoon? Very strange. I wonder if it’s allergies like me. I’ll not be able to breathe, constantly blowing my nose, and can hardly swallow with my scratchy throat in the morning, but by afternoon it’s cleared up a bit.
I started “The Art of Racing in the Rain” today, and so far I really enjoy it. I always like books when they have an interesting, original narrator, and this is told by the dog, so I like that about it. My mom’s already read it, which is why I have it. She’ll buy books for her book club, read them, like them or dislike them, and then not ever want to read them again, so she gives them to me. I’m not complaining, I have an addiction to books, so the more the merrier. My only issue, is never reading anything again. She has re-read “Gone With the Wind” and the Bible, but I think that’s about it. I re-read all my favorites, I wish I had more time to catch up on a few I miss. As much as I love starting a new book, I love re-reading a favorite just as much. It’s like catching up with an old friend you haven’t seen in years, you start to talk and recap your lives since the last time you’ve visited and pretty soon it doesn’t feel like it’s been years separating the two of you. It’s like you’ve picked up where you last stopped like it was only yesterday. That’s a guaranteed sign of a great friend and a great book.
Last summer when I was home visiting family and friends I was driving through Indiana and I came upon a public broadcast station that on that particular night was playing only bluegrass classics. It was love at first song! The emotion and girth of these singers, musicians, and songs blew me away. It’s like listening to an old classic on vinyl, you get so much more that just the music, you get the entire culture with it. That’s how bluegrass is to me, a culture. I think music is one of those miraculous mediums in life that come to you when you need it. I hadn’t heard or sought out any bluegrass since then, but bluegrass found me again. It’s not the classic stuff that touched me deeply in Indiana on that eventful drive, but some new stuff, brought to my attention by the soundtrack to the “Hunger Games” movie. It’s amazing! New artists singing old tortured melodies full of story and sorrow, paired up with a movie which was a very well done adaption of the book.
My friend and I started journaling to each other and our crazy antics and inside jokes slowly turned into a fantastic story idea so we went with it. It’s not the next best American novel, so calm down. It is however extremely fun and a great way to stay connected to a great friend. We had set it down a few months ago because our creative juices had run dry for a bit. But we decided to start it back up again and were working on it today. Here’s an earlier excerpt-
“Hello! Welcome to the Book Shack!” Rob yells at T.P.D. in all of his glorious nakedness.
“Uh. Hi.” T.P.D. says shyly while trying to avoid looking directly at any of the naked.
“Can we help you find anything?” Rob questions, not at all awkward in his birthday suit.
“Um. Why are you naked?” T.P.D. asks tentatively.
“Oh. Right. I’m the Emperor. We got a new collection of great old fairy tales, myths, and legends. Over there you’ll find them.” Rob answers feeling his answer was sufficient, walks off through the growing crowd of gawking women. Leaving Thomas to turn helplessly right into Karen. Karen is wrapped in a long flowing crimson cape, over top a tight form fitting peasant girl dress, complete with basket.
“Oh, hey! Remember me from last night? The Pizza Dude? I’m Thomas.” T.P.D. says to Karen slightly disappointed that she is not also naked.
“Oh yeah. Hey. Did you get your sushi fix?” Karen answers smiling.
“I did, thanks. That Suzee girl is something.” T.P.D. admits also smiling.
“Yeah. She’s great.” Karen agrees.
“So, I like your Red Riding Hood costume. I get it, but what’s up with the naked guy? He said he’s the Emperor?” T.P.D. inquires, gesturing to Rob entertaining a flock of women.
“Mmmm… he can be my Emperor…” Karen says under her breath while watching Rob, “Uh. I mean, yeah. I don’t know that story, you’d have to ask Maggie, she understood.”
“Oh. So, what’s your name? I feel bad since this is the third time we’ve talked and I don’t know it.” T.P.D. states, trying to keep the conversation flowing and not in the naked guy’s direction.
“Karen. It’s nice to meet you.” She says smiling again.
“What a pretty name.” T.P.D. says smiling, thinking that this is going really well.
“Excuse me? Really? You’ve got to be joking!” Karen huffs, then walks away, mumbling something resembling ‘boys!’ under her breath.
Stunned and confused Thomas starts meandering around the store, but with more and more women rushing in, the store is getting cramped quickly. So Thomas escapes through a rare and closing gap of women and heads back to the, now comfort zone of the SUSHIES cart and his new friend, Suzee.
